One of the best tips I've heard for getting better portraits is to use a tripod, as you're taking the photos you should be looking directly at your subject(s) and showing the kind of expression you want them to have for the picture - if you smile at them they'll probably smile back. Keep your face as close to the lens as you can so they are looking towards the camera.
